Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots, plukes or zits. In this case, "acne vulgaris" means "common acne." It's generally associated with puberty, but can also be caused by other hormonal activity, such as menstruation. It can also be caused by stress, irritation, allergy, medicaiton, or simply just be a medical condition. Below are the 10 things you can to do help control and treat acne naturally:
  1. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking enough water. Generally, people should drink about 64 ounces, or 8 glasses, of water per day. This will do two things. By keeping your body hydrated, it likewise keeps your skin hydrated, which will help keep it from drying out. Second, the water helps carry waste around your body, and will help remove waste from your skin and body, one of the causes of acne.
  2. Eat foods, or take a vitamin rich in Zinc. As a treatment for acne, Zinc is an anti-bacterial agent, and will help prevent flare-ups in your skin. Conversely, a diet low in zinc may actually cause your acne to begin with.
  3. Likewise, eating foods rich in Vitamin A is a good treatement for acne. Vitamin A will help strengthen your skin, and will actually work to prevent acne from occurring. Vitamin A also helps reduce the body's production of sebum, one of the leading causes of acne.
  4. Wash your face twice a day, with a cleanser, like Nutrogena, or with a sulfer based soap. This treatment should be done when you wake up, and before you go to bed. Be gentle, however, as over-washing, or harsh scrubbing, may make the situation worse. Overwashing may convince your body to product more sebum, which will defeat what we're trying to do.
  5. Wash or change your pillow case often. Overnight, your pillow case will absorb the oils and dirt from your skin. If you leave it there, no matter how well you wash your face, the oil will find its way back to you, through your pillow.
  6. Keep your hair off your face. Your hair has a high concentration of oil no matter how clean it is. Keep it pulled back from your face, either by pulling it back or up. Not only will your skin be irritated by contact with your hair, it will pick up the oils, and be worse off for it.
  7. Avoid makeup. Makeup is a contributing factor to your pores closing, particularly if left on without washing off. If you are in a situation where you must wear makeup, wear products that are water-based, so that they have a minimal effect on your pores.
  8. Exfoliate your skin. This treatment can either take the form of just using regular soap and an exfoliating sponge or cloth, or using chemicals, like salicylic acid and glycolic acid. These acids are meant to destroy the top layer of skin, which will help to unclog clogged pores. Many of these treatment products are available over the counter at your neighborhood drugstore.
  9. Do not pick, squeeze or scratch your outbreaks. This actually causes sebum production, will in turn, will just give you mroe, bigger breakouts. By squeezing, you are irritating your skin more, which will just cause more outbreaks.
  10. Finally, don't worry about treating your acne. Stress can be one of the major causes of clogged pores, and the more you worry about it, think about it, or obsess over it, the worse it will become.
